Oak is Out
One of the hardest things to do is convince homeowners to paint cabinets and trim. We’ve said it a million times…oak is out. So just to get our point across, we’re throwing in a quote from a credible resource everyone knows and loves….Better Homes and Gardens. This comes from BHG’s 30 Low-Cost Cabinet Makeovers. And I quote, ”boring brown cabinets now offer streamlined style after several coats of white paint masked their dated golden oak facade.”

BH&G does not sell to my clients. They still prefer natural wood cabinets and trim over painted.

Oak was at it’s peak of fashion in the 1980’s…
What is “now” is cherry, maple, environmentally friendly bamboo, and white painted cabinets. Since you can’t fake cherry or maple by restaining oak (the grain gives it away), the answer is to paint. You can’t open a home magazine these days to find oak, but you also can’t find home magazine that doesn’t feature a white kitchen.

Oak is out and even in my own home -it is being painted over. That being said, when I stage homes in the retirement subdivisions - I leave the oak cabinets alone. We stagers at Re$ale Design and Home Staging will change out the hardware, though.

Kathleen,
You made a great point, retirement-aged buyers and downsizers prefer the look of natural wood. Good stagers and realtors know how to cater to the market and appeal to the buyers in the best way possible. I agree that replacing hardware is a must and is in everyone’s budget.

Thanks for the write up!

Here is a great article from a homeowner/do-it-yourself couple who painted their cabinets. You can’t beat the price!

Just last week I recommended to the homeowners they should replace oak cupboards or paint them white. Home buyers want maple, cherry or white cupboards today.

You got it Karen! Give the buyers what they want. Thanks.
